Here we are just days away from 2017, We can say that 2016 was a great year for new video game releases. There have been many ups and downs related to the expectation of the gamer regarding games, but also many games that surprised us in terms of gameplay. We have seen great games been released in 2016 for our PS4 console. Our top 5 is based on the opinions and experiences of our staff. Join us as we count down to number one!

 

5. Final Fantasy XV - Square Fenix - Q4/2016

 

 

 

Final Fantasy XV is an open world action role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix for the consoles. The game released on November 29, 2016. The game offers an open-world environment and action-based battle system, it offers elements such as switching weapons, vehicle travel, and camping. Final Fantasy XV takes place in the world of Eos. It is under domination of Niflheim. Noctis wants to take back his homeland and its crystal that is taken by Niflheim.

 

Final Fantasy XV is generally received as favorable from critics. The game’s elements such as the combat, soundtrack, visuals, open world, JRPG, lead characters and the ending were praised by critics, but it had some negative reviews regarding its plot.

 

Why?

 

This is one of the top favorites of 2016, and we believe it is a must to put Final Fantasy XV among this list, since it was perceived as a favorable game from the critics, and many of the game’s element where praised by critics, while Final Fantasy remains a popular game among gamers with its many series the game offered.

 

4. Watch Dogs 2 - Ubisoft - Q4/2016

 

 

 

Watch Dogs 2 is an open world action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft. It was released in November 2016. It was set in San Francisco Bay Area, the game is played from a Third-person perspective. Players are controlling Marcus Holloway, a hacker that joined the DedSec group to take on the establishment. There are multiple options to complete missions, and every step is considered as an important one. The game was released and it was generally praised for its improvements that were done from the previous series (Watch Dogs) in the areas like hacking where more options are available now, the setting, the characters and the driving. However it had some technical issues, which were later on patched, were considered as imperfections of the game.

 

Why?

 

Due to its success the game ‘Watch Dogs 2’ received, and the multiple improvements to the game in general from the previous series, made it hard to not ignore it in the top 5 of Game Hypermart. It has made several improvements from its previous series, and considered as a generally favorable game.

 

3. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - Infinity Ward - Q4/2016

 

 

 

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a first-person shooter and was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the thirteenth video game of the Call of Duty series and it was released on November 4, 2016. The game’s campaign is about the battle for the Solar System, where the Settlement Defense Front (SDF) is trying to take over. As a player you are taking control of Captain Nick Reyes.

 

The announcement trailer of Infinite Warfare was met with mixed reception from the game critics and journalists and a negative reception from the Call of Duty community. Its announcement trailer was the second-most disliked trailer on Youtube at the time. Nevertheless, the game eventually received positive reviews upon release; the single-player campaign and zombie mode received positive reviews, while the multiplayer mode lacked of innovation.

 

Why?

 

The Call of Duty series has always been known for its fast pacing shooters environment where lots of action is involved. The game eventually received the positive reviews they deserve for the amazing single-player and famous zombie mode the game provides, however there is still improvement needed on the multiplayer mode where it lacks innovation, since the game has not improved very much on that part. Eventually, the developers of Call of Duty have to listen to the critics and improve on those parts if it wants to maintain successful.

 

2. Battlefield 1 - Electronic Arts - Q4/2016

 

 

 

Battlefield 1 is a first-person shooter video game developed by EA DICE and published by EA. It is the fifteenth video game in the Battlefield series, and the first main focused game in the series since Battlefield 4. The game was released on October 21, 2016. Battlefield 1 received positive reviews by its critics and was seen as an improvement from the Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline series. The praise was mainly focused on its World War I theme, the multiplayer mode, visuals, single-player campaign and its sound design.

 

The game mainly focuses on teamwork, and the game is set in the period of the World War I and is inspired by the historical events. Players can use World War I equipment to combat its opponents. Players also can take control of various vehicles. Players can control several characters in the campaign. If the player dies, they can automatically take control of another soldier instead of reloading to the checkpoint, which was the case in the previous series. The multiplayer mode supports up to 64 players. Multiplayer maps are based on particular locations around the world. The game has six game modes, which include Domination, Conquest, Rush, TDM, and War Pigeons.

 

Why?

 

The Battlefield series has consistently stunned the gamers; because of its innovation and different themes they offer every series. This year the praise was mainly focused on its theme, its multiplayer mode that never disappoints the gamer, and the breathtaking visuals it offers to the gamer. The gameplay is absolutely on fleek, since it offers the gamer the ultimate warfare feeling with the authentic WWI weapons, artillery, and vehicles. The game is spot on, made how it should be done!

 

1. FIFA 17 - Electronic Arts - Q4/2016

 

 

 

FIFA 17 was released on 27 September in North America and 29 September for the rest of the world. This is the first FIFA game that is using Frostbite game engine. On 21 July 2016, It was announced that Marco Reus going to be on the cover of the game after a public vote. EA Sports announced that FIFA 17 is going to have new attributes regarding gameplay. Also, FIFA 17 would include J1 League and J. League Cup that would be featured for the first time. The game has received positive reviews with the gameplay, the new Frostbite engine, sound, and overall presentation. FIFA 17 has been the fastest selling edition of the franchise FIFA.

Here comes our number one! This choice is made because of the consistency the FIFA series always bring, and the improvements they bring to the series every year and new upgrades. The popular FIFA Ultimate team is one of the successes of the multiplayer mode that FIFA offers to its gamers. It has also been the fastest selling edition of the franchise. Whenever you start playing FIFA you cannot stop playing since it can be very addictive!
